The British Academy headquarters completed a major transformation in 2024 with support from the Wohl Legacy

The British Academy, the UK’s national body for the humanities and social sciences, has been at the heart of scholarly debate and public discourse for over 120 years. Yet its headquarters at 10-11 Carlton House Terrace had long struggled to engage wider audiences beyond the academic community.

A major transformation, completed in 2024 with support from the Wohl Legacy, has changed that. The redevelopment created three new, double-height event spaces equipped with the latest hybrid technology, enabling the Academy to broadcast lectures, conferences and debates to audiences around the world. Maurice and Vivienne shared a passion for art and culture, and this project reflects their belief in making knowledge and ideas accessible to all, not just a privileged few.

The project strengthens the British Academy’s role as a beacon for the humanities and social sciences, opening up its work to more people than ever before and ensuring its important contribution to public life continues for generations to come.
