At the heart of the renovations is the Wohl Reading Room, which overlooks this intimate landscaped courtyard

The Warburg Institute in Bloomsbury is one of the world’s leading centres for the study of art, culture and the classical tradition, home to a remarkable library of 360,000 volumes and an irreplaceable archive of manuscripts, rare books and working papers. For decades, however, its treasures were largely hidden from view, tucked away in an ageing building that had suffered from years of neglect.

A major transformation, completed in 2024, has changed that. At the heart of the project, and funded by the Wohl Legacy, is the Wohl Reading Room, a dedicated space for scholars to now access this Institute’s special collections. The space benefits from generous amounts of natural light and has direct access to an intimate landscaped courtyard.

The renovation has opened up one of London’s great intellectual institutions to new audiences while ensuring its collections are preserved and accessible for generations to come.
