The National Library of Israel – NLI, formerly the Jewish National and University Library, relocated and opened in a stunning thoughtfully designed new building, in October 2023. The library is dedicated to collecting the cultural treasures of Israel and the Jewish people. With more than 5 million books, 2 and a half million photographs, manuscripts, maps and much more, including historical and modern day evidence, of Jewish heritage worldwide.
This landmark building, is situated in the heart of Maurice and Vivien Wohl’s cherished Jerusalem, next to the Knesset and The Wohl Rose Garden.
The library’s new premises, is now home to The Wohl Synagogue, situated on the 3rd level and beautifully designed with a vaulted ceiling, that draws the eye upwards with a skylight that delivers natural light. It is a very calm setting for quiet prayer and contemplation.
The Wohl Synagogue also has a modular mechitza (a partition that separates men and women during prayer services), which can also be used to create a multi-functional space, suitable for lectures, classes and other gatherings too.
The Library welcomes visitors from all sectors, faiths, and communities of Israeli society and around the world. As such, both the Wohl Synagogue and an additional prayer room are for people of diverse faiths, this was a priority when designing the new building, promising an inclusive atmosphere consistent with the Library’s vision.
